Barefoot Time Trial

I’ve done 4 Time Trials in my sandals

June             23:19

July              22:57

August          Did Not Run

September     21:39

October         21:19

November, December, January and February   -  Did Not Run

March            21:24        Barefoot

Today, I ran my first barefoot TT and I’m thrilled with my results.  I was 6 seconds off my Personal Best set in October ‘10 (also the last time that I ran a TT).

I took it comfortable today with the plan of using the first kilometer as a warm up and then to speed down the hill to the round-about turnaround, push up the road at a comfortable but hard pace, recover on the brief down and then push the last kilo including the little climb up College Road and then just short of a sprint to the finish.  I also didn’t check my log book to see what my last time was and I really couldn’t remember other than between 5 and 6 minutes a kilometer.  I followed my plan, watching Val ahead of me and passing Chris just after 2.5kms.  I was pleasantly surprised to have N tell me that I was just 6 seconds off my best time – the effort felt so much less and that really shows progress!

Stomp of Approval from BarefootRunners.org

brs_stomp_150x150_white_rim

“In recognition of BFR/MR, the Barefoot Runners Society would like to offer you our "Stomp of Approval". Would you proudly display our seal on your website?

Cheers,
Mike Rives
"Head Stomper" :)”

Yes, I absolutely will proudly display the seal on my website.

I will also, proudly, let you know that I did a total of 59.5km last week and that included 42.5km barefooted. The more I run, the more I prefer being barefoot.

Tidbit Tuesday

A short video of Michael Sandler, author of Barefoot Running which I reviewed in July, talks about how he healed from a major accident to run barefoot.

Book Review

Barefoot Running

I have just finished reading this book and I loved it.  Michael Sandler was seriously injured in an accident and was told that he would never run again.  He started running barefoot and was soon "dancing on the trails and flying on the roads".
The book covers everything from why you would want to run barefoot, tearing off your shoes and feeling the earth beneath your feet, running as a dance with nature , rediscovering the joy of running and what to wear if you must wear something on your feet.

The foreward is written by Danny Dreyer of Chirunning, who says, "We've spent the better part of the last 60 years evolving a lifestyle that has left us increasingly desensitized to the earth we live on" and "Walking or running barefoot on a daily basis is the perfect antidote for a culture desperately needing to find balance and grounding."

The major appeal of this book, for me, was the inclusion of the earth connection and the natural ways.  Michael talks about running in the now and running awarefoot, being the observer of your own experience and feeling the ground.  There are all the practicals that I was looking for too, like the warm-ups and strengthening exercises and a 12-week plan to barefoot running.
I can highly recommend this book if you are in anyway looking at moving toward a barefoot running experience.
