The longest drive to Comrades 2014

Another amazing (almost) week in Umhlanga, Durban and Pietermaritzburg for Comrades 2014.
I drove down with Gramps, GG and two exchange students on Wednesday. We left Johannesburg at 6 am and arrived in Umhlanga at 5:30 pm!! 11 and a half hours for a 600km journey that can take six and a half hours.
But, what a great day out ...
Breakfast and geocaching in Swinburne

Gramps, Alaska, Taiwan and GG eating a homemade breakfast

Gramps and I on the bridge after our first geocache of the day
A stop at the Green Lantern Inn to show GG the walls decorated with shirts, caps and numbers from Comrades runners and Duzi canoeists, and a quick post box cache nearby.

Gramps and GG at the Green Lantern Hotel
A trip up to Spionkop for histories sake - and so Gramps can brag to friends while wearing his Liverpool shirt, and a quick cache here too.

Then off to a very favourite place for bulk shopping, Wedgewood Nougat

So much to choose from so I settled for a little of it all

Gramps declared the new biscuits "Very Nice"
And the  last stop before the final destination was The Comrades Wall of Honour to see my yellow plaque, find a few belonging to friends and the fourth and final geocache of the day.

Taiwan and Alaska getting their first taste of what this race is all about
My well earned plaque for my up and down

I found Caroline Lee's plaque all the way at the top

Gramps is obviously there too, at the start of the wall
And so my excitement builds as we near the start of The Ultimate Human Race.

Road closures along the route

Well deserved refreshment at Lifesavers on our arrival
